Laurence H. Estrin Technical Production Management
Laurence attended Cal State Los Angeles in the early 1960's and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering. While Laurence was attending Cal State Los Angeles, he was an assistant instructor in Theater Arts for the Los Angeles City School System In the early 1970's Laurence attended the Anderson School at UCLA and received his MBA through the continuing education program. Laurence started his professional career in 1957 with the Olesen Company in Hollywood, California, and has been continuously involved in engineering, design and production management positions in the live entertainment field since that time. Mr. Estrin has been responsible for the management of numerous technical support installations and operations facilities in Europe, Asia, Australia, The Middle East and North and South America. The most recent world-class special event for Laurence was as the Technical Producer for the Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Salt Lake City. In that capacity Laurence was responsible for the procurement, construction coordination (milestone time line development and budgeting), operation and dismantling of all the theatrical elements of the production, which included scenic elements containing 55 tons of steel. Mr. Estrin was responsible for administrating the multi-million dollar technical production budget, which included responsibility for the management and scheduling of several hundred union, non-union and volunteer crews as well as the lighting, scenic, audio, crane, ice, scaffolding and power sub contractors. The Paralympic Opening Ceremony followed the Olympic Closing Ceremony, in the same stadium, by less than two weeks. This was a fast track, highly orchestrated and coordinated project. Additionally Laurence was the technical production liaison between ceremonies and the International Sports Broadcast Group. The reviews of the flawless production were outstanding. Laurence spent most of the year 2000 living in Sydney Australia, where he was the Ceremonies Director of Communications and technical liaison between the Ceremonies and International Sports Broadcasters divisions of the Sydney Olympic Organizing Committee. During the four years leading up to the Sydney Olympics, Mr. Estrin was an audio design, communications design and peer consultant to both the SOCOG Ceremonies group and OCA, the stadium owners. Mr. Estrin interfaced directly with the architectural and electronic design team throughout the design and implementation phases of the construction of the Sydney Olympic Stadium. For the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Laurence had full responsibility for all production communications, RF frequency coordination, and audio and data signal distribution within Sydney Olympic Stadium. Mr. Estrin recently conceived and co-founded a new Internet based streaming text and audio data base service, “Speche Communications”, based in Madison Wisconsin. Mr. Estrin and the company have been granted some significant patents. In January 2002 the company was merged into the operations of Stenograph Inc. Laurence has maintained membership for over twenty years in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He also is a member of the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers, the National Association of Broadcasters, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and a past president of the Hollywood & Vine Toastmasters International Club. Laurence was presented with several Certificates of Esteem from the Department of Defense for his patriotic services in regards to his professional volunteer work on twelve Bob Hope Overseas Tours, from 1972 through 1993. In 1992, President Bush awarded the Civilian Service Medal to Laurence for his work with the USO in Operation Desert Storm. Nixon In 1989 Mr. Estrin's expertise in production communication technology was recognized by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with a special Emmy award for his participation in the engineering and application of the RTS multi channel production communications intercom systems. Mr. Estrin was awarded a Platinum Record by NARAS, for his creative audio production involvement on the Whitney Houston - United States National Anthem, single record, audiocassette, Compact Disc and video in 1991. Laurence has received television air credit or program credit for well over 2,000 major television shows, World CLASS mega events, major corporate meetings and industrial shows, motion picture premieres, Event Press Conferences and Special Events The Archdiocese of Los Angeles selected Laurence to design and manage all of the audio and communications requirements for the historic visit of Pope John Paul to Los Angeles in September 1987. Laurence, acting in behalf of the Archdiocese, personally supervised the audio and communications at all 19 public and private appearances of the Pope. Laurence was responsible for the technical execution of the extraordinarily successful first interactive teleconference between the Pope and several large groups of children in four cities. In 1995, the Archdiocese of New York retained the professional services of Mr. Estrin as a production consultant and broadcast liaison for the Papal Mass on The Great Lawn in Central Park, attended by over one million people. · A highlight in the career of Laurence Estrin was his conception, design and implementation of the wireless microphone system used by the referees in the National Football League. · Laurence is especially proud of his creative involvement in the conception and development of the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade. Some of the hobbies of Laurence include cooking, specializing in Russian food, movie going and collecting unique souvenir's from events he has participated in. Recent Awards Laurence was named by THEA (Themed Entertainment Association) as a significant contributor to two major world-class events during the year 2000.
