Intercom, RF and other interesting Links

  • CP Communications - I have been working with and using CP Communications since their beginning when I was part of Erskine-Shapiro Theatre Technology. Michael Mason and David Goldsmith have created a terrific company and now with the acquision of Total RF and particularly Production Radio Rentals and Henry Cohen, have a world class RF department. Additionally their comms equipment is bar none including RTS and most importantly Riedel Artist Digital intercom.

  • Breakout dB 9 connectors from Gravatech - A fellow Comm nerd, Jess Contreras, showed me a company that makes really nice dB 9 connectors to terminal blocks for quick interface to Riedel GPIO in particular. Take a look. Also I found a similar company with narrow form factor and screw lock down: Winford Engineering. Solves the problem of connecting to Riedel.

  • Bruce Kraemer - provides a survey service to producers and staging companies in TV, AV and the special event business. He lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan it is very easy for him to go to New York City sites to get those annoying bits of technical information that every project needs. What are exact dimensions of that freight elevator? How much three phase power does a venue have available? How high are the ceilings and how much do the chandeliers get in the way? Are you looking for an art gallery kind of space, a loft, or something off the beaten path? He can find you several choices and send you photos that might reveal more than you can see on a venue's website. He does scale drawings so your designers know where things really are located and has worked in almost all of the departments a show uses, from lighting designer to Audio A1, from Intercom guru to RF coordinator, from prop manager to event producer and technical director. His experience is amazing. Definitely look into his services.

  • Audioman ISO BOX - This inexpensive box implements the BuzzBuster Transformer box shown in the drawing HERE but without the switches for the audio only functionality. It seems to work well. The principle is that in intercom systems the actual audio is unbalanced with channel A on pin 2 of the connector and channel B on pin 3. The two transformers isolate each of the pins separately and the capacitors block the dc in the intercom systems from the transformers which would burn them up. I have not tested the transformers to verify the effect on hybrid nulling. The transformers specified in my BuzzBuster were selected to affect the nulling of hybrids as little as possible. look at the testing HERE. Here is the simplified schematic of a BuzzBuster which is what is in the Audioman ISO Box.:

  • Intracom system - This is a full featured matrix system that runs on your PC or Mac (Boot Camp or Parallels).  Wireless First was the intercom supplier for a major corporate event which covered 5 cities and had 6 sites with 2 in New York.  Three global intercom channels were interfaced over the internet with astonishing audio clarity.  Watch a 60 second edited clip of Pete's screen during the event and hear the audio quality HERE.
Got a network in your company or production facility?  Add this (and a few DA/AD converters and relay control for other interfacing) and you have a matrix comm system.  Put a panel on every producer's laptop PC for inter show communication across the world.  This sysem has normal internet latency issues, similar to cell phones, but for informational communication it's wonderful.  Point to point, party lines, Page, monitoring, telephone interfaces, GPIO, Port level volume control, automatic gain control on panel mic, radio interface...it's all there.  Who needs all that hardware!  (click on picture for a blowup-dimmed ports are not active and can be hidden)

  • Lectrosonics wireless - Terrific selection of wireless equipment.  Check out the TM400 specifically designed for measurement microphones.  Look at the complete line. The SM system is amazing too.  Use the RM remote to adjust the bodypack audibly THROUGH the mic while the pack is buried in the costume!

  • Studio Technologies - feature-rich, dependable professional audio products for studio recording, broadcast, film-post, and test applications.  Intercom announcers stations .  They make a terrific 2-4 wire converter with built in comm power supply to compete with and surpass the Clear-Com CCI-22. Check out the Model 47 which provides DC power on both pins 2 and 3.

  • Hyperlink Technologies - Antenna systems for Wi-fi and 2.4 GHz HME DX200 systems

  • Clear-Com Intercom Systems - downloadable manuals (Most complete website of all manufacturers)

  • Jess Heimlich - Digital Communications Systems - Website of the busiest TV comms designer in the world. Terrific iPhone app developed by Jess allows wireless programming of Adam Comm systems,  Eve Edit

  • R. J. (Rick) Massei - We have worked with Rick on several shows, both as a terrific audio person as well as production manager.  He does tour production management - Broadcast Audio Engineering - FOH & Monitor Mix - and is a media Event Specialist.

  • HME 2.5 GHz DX210 intercom system - This is an innovative wireless intercom system.  Aimed at the fast food market, it promises to be a useful tool in productions as well.  Automatic frequency allocation as well as dual channels makes it very easy and  convenient to use.  Because of the high frequency, it doesn't cover as well beyond the walls of your venue as analog RF intercom does, but additional antenna splitters are available to remote a second set of antennas.  Cut coax antennas can spread the usefulness over several rooms.

  • Norwest Productions - This company is truly international.  Their ability to provide what amounts to "Local" service wherever they are sets them apart.  We have done several shows with them since the first at the Sydney Olympics and their personnel are the most friendly to work with.

  • Professional Wireless Intermod Analysis System - In addition to a complete frequency analysis, the data for many RF products are self contained as well as direct FCC database download.  Enter a zip code and automatically bring up the TV stations in your area.  This is the most complete intermod program I have ever used.  Touring is very easy.  Just select the new TV station zone and click on recalculate all frequencies and you're done!

  • Headset adapters - 5 pin to 4 pin, Male and female turnarounds
Road runner - Build to order adapters
Sunset West Productions - 4 pin turnarounds
